Joining a Teams Meeting

How to join a Microsoft Teams meeting from any device, with no account or software required.

Joining from a browser

You do not need a Microsoft account, a Teams licence, or any software installed. Anyone with the meeting link can join as a guest from a web browser.

  1. Click the meeting link in the email or calendar invitation.
  2. Your browser will open a page asking how you want to join. Select "Continue on this browser" (you do not need to download anything).
  3. Enter your name so other attendees can see who you are.
  4. You will see a preview screen with toggles for your camera and microphone. Turn these on if you want to be seen and heard.
  5. Click "Join now".
  6. You may be placed in a lobby briefly while the meeting organiser admits you.

Allowing microphone and camera access

Your browser will ask for permission to use your microphone and camera the first time you join a Teams meeting. You must allow these for other attendees to hear and see you.

If you accidentally click "Block", you will need to change the permission manually.

Follow the steps for your browser below to fix this.

Select your browser:

  1. Click the lock icon (or tune icon) in the address bar, to the left of the URL.
  2. Find Camera and Microphone in the permissions list.
  3. Change both from "Block" to "Allow".
  4. Click the reload button or press F5 to refresh the page.
  5. Rejoin the meeting. Chrome will now use your camera and microphone.

  1. Click the lock icon in the address bar, to the left of the URL.
  2. Click "Permissions for this site".
  3. Find Camera and Microphone and set both to "Allow".
  4. Go back to the meeting tab and refresh the page (F5).
  5. Rejoin the meeting.

  1. In the Safari menu bar, click Safari then Settings (or Preferences).
  2. Go to the Websites tab.
  3. Select Camera in the left panel, then find teams.microsoft.com and set it to "Allow".
  4. Do the same for Microphone.
  5. Close Settings and refresh the meeting page.

  1. Click the lock icon in the address bar.
  2. Click "Connection secure", then "More Information".
  3. Go to the Permissions tab.
  4. Find Use the Camera and Use the Microphone.
  5. Uncheck "Use Default" and select "Allow" for both.
  6. Close the dialog and refresh the page.

Joining from the Teams app

If you have the Teams app installed on your computer or phone, clicking the meeting link will open it directly. The app handles camera and microphone permissions through your device settings rather than the browser.

If you need help installing the Teams app, see the Microsoft Teams guide.

Test before your first meeting.

If you have not used Teams before, ask the IT team for a test meeting link so you can check your audio and video work before the real meeting. Email meetings@rotary9660.org.au and ask for a quick test.

Troubleshooting

Check that your microphone and speakers are not muted. In the Teams meeting, look at the bottom toolbar: the microphone icon should not have a line through it. Also check your browser permissions using the steps above.

Make sure no other application (such as Zoom or another browser tab) is using your camera. Close any other video apps and refresh the Teams meeting page. Check your browser permissions using the steps above.

Teams works best in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. If you are using an older browser, try switching to one of these. Safari also works on Mac and iPhone, though some features may be limited.

The meeting organiser needs to admit you from the lobby. If you have been waiting for a while, contact the person who sent you the meeting link and ask them to check the lobby. Make sure you entered your name when joining so they can identify you.
