What is Self-Service Password Reset?

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is a feature of Microsoft 365 that lets you reset your own forgotten password — safely, securely, and without needing to call or email IT.

It works by verifying it is really you through your phone (the same phone you registered for MFA during setup). Once verified, you can choose a brand-new password.

Important — you must have completed initial setup first. SSPR only works if you have already finished the first-time account setup, including setting up MFA (Step 3). If you have not yet done this, or if your MFA is not working, contact the IT Team instead (see below).

How to reset your password

  1. On your computer, go to the password reset page:

    aka.ms/sspr

    You can also get here by going to office.com, clicking Sign in, entering your email, and then clicking "Forgot my password" on the password screen.

  2. Enter your Rotary email address (e.g. jane.smith@rotary9660.org.au) and complete the CAPTCHA (the "I'm not a robot" checkbox), then click Next.

  3. Microsoft will verify your identity using one of the methods you set up during your initial account setup:

    • Authenticator app — Microsoft will show a 2-digit number on your computer screen. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone, type that number in, and tap Approve.
    • SMS text message — Microsoft will text a 6-digit code to your mobile number. Enter it on your computer.
  4. Once verified, you will be asked to enter and confirm your new password. Choose a strong password — see the tips on the Change Your Password page.

  5. Click Finish. Your password has been reset! You can now sign in to Microsoft 365 with your new password.

What if SSPR doesn't work?

SSPR may not work if:

  • You have not yet completed the initial MFA setup
  • You no longer have access to the phone you registered
  • Your account has been locked due to too many failed sign-in attempts

In any of these cases, contact the Rotary District 9660 IT Team and they will reset your account for you.
